Go global in San Francisco

THE BALTIMORE SUN

San Francisco, everyone's favorite city, has never lacked for visitors. Consequently, room prices in town, even at the cheaper motels that stretch westward along Lombard Street, are often as steep as the city's streets. Hotels typically don't offer package deals because they don't have to.

So is it really possible that the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property in a convenient spot on Sutter Street, has a package good through March 31 that not only rents you a room but also throws in your pick of cultural experiences as well?

For each night of your stay using the Carlton's "Around the World in San Francisco" package, you can choose one of the following: admission to the communal baths at Kabuki Springs & Spa in Japantown; tea service at Imperial Tea Court in Chinatown; cover charge and drinks at the Star & Plough, an Irish pub in the Richmond District; dinner at Limon, a Peruvian/Latino restaurant in the Mission District; coffee and dessert at Steps of Rome in North Beach; or movies and popcorn at the historic Castro Theatre in The Castro.

Is it too good to be true? Not by our calculations.

Even if you don't take part in any of the activities, using the package saves $114 on the room alone. Package guests also get a 15 percent discount at the Carlton's in-house restaurant. With all these inducements, how can you stay home?

Package is $543 per couple and includes a four-night stay and hotel taxes. Doesn't include transportation to or in San Francisco.
