Mt. St. Joe's Birdsong proves hard to beat
Mount St. Joseph senior forward Louis Birdsong, 6 feet 6 and 240 pounds, had another solid week for the No. 1 Gaels, who have clinched their fourth Baltimore Catholic League regular-season title. A returning All-Metro selection, Birdsong capped off a week that included victories over McDonogh, 69-50, and Calvert Hall, 67-54, to help the Gaels clinch the No. 1 seed in the BCL and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference tournaments.
In the win over Calvert Hall on Friday, Birdsong led four Gaels' players who scored in double figures, finishing with 17 points and six rebounds. Calvert Hall was the Gaels' 30th victory without a loss, a milestone for Mount St. Joseph (31-4 last season) that tied the Bob Wade-coached Dunbar teams of 1982-83 (31-0) and 1983-84 (30-2) as the only Baltimore-area boys basketball teams to post consecutive 30-win seasons.
Others considered: Ryan Shea, Mount St. Joseph, swimming; Johnny Higgins, Randallstown, basketball; Devin Ewing, Harford Tech, basketball.
