COLLEGE PARK -- What began as a legitimate opportunity for Maryland to upset the No. 2-ranked team in the country before a home crowd yesterday ultimately turned into the reality of an eight-point difference between two storied basketball programs that at times this season couldn't have seemed further apart.
An odd quiet fell among the 17,950 fans in the final minutes of Maryland's 96-88 loss to Duke at Comcast Center, and as the realization of the Terps' fate against the hated Blue Devils began to settle in, the early rustle of coats being gathered was easily heard.
