Valentine's event slated for children ages 2 to 6


Children ages 2 to 6 are invited to celebrate "Wilde Valentine's Day!" at Slayton House. The event, which includes face- and hand-painting, a Valentine exchange and other activities, as well as a snack, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Each child should bring a Valentine to exchange.

The cost is $5 a child; $4.50 for Columbia lien-payers. Children must be accompanied by an adult, who are admitted free. Tickets should be purchased in advance. Slayton House is on Wilde Lake Village Green.

Hand dancing classes on at Bain Center

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is sponsoring hand dancing classes for adults, ages 18 and older, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, through March 29 at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way.

Participants can learn the rhythm-and-blues style of swing dance. The line-dance class covers basic footwork, syncopated patterns, timing and phrasing. Partners are not required.

The cost is $59. Shirley Duncan, owner of Charm City Dancers, is the instructor.

Swing dancing lessons March 24

Ariston and Monica DeLeon will lead an evening of swing dancing from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. March 24 in the ballroom at Historic Oakland.

Participants will learn six-count jitterbug and other swing steps to 1940s big-band music. The DeLeons will demonstrate, then teach the dances.

Tickets are $5. No dance partner is needed. Space is limited to 60 people.

Legal screening -- Attorney Stephen R. Elville will be at the Bain Center for the 60 Plus Wills and Legal Screening Program from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday. Services include simple wills, powers of attorney, living wills, small estates and deed changes. The program is open to Howard County residents ages 60 and older. The cost is on a sliding scale. Senior luncheon -- Wilde Lake senior residents are invited to a luncheon sponsored by the Wilde Lake Community Association at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green.
