Hammond edged River Hill, 36-30, and Glenelg, 36-33, yesterday to clinch its second straight Howard County dual meet crown in a tri-meet at Marriotts Ridge High.
Adam Blake (189), who regularly goes at 171 pounds, overcame Jesse Storey to lead the victory over River Hill (9-4, 8-3), and Devon Gillett (112) won the night's final bout, 12-4, over Brian Marcoux to clinch the win over Glenelg (10-4, 8-3). River Hill beat Glenelg, 36-22.
Hammond (15-1, 9-0) now looks to begin defense of its 2A-1A state duals crown with Wednesday's South Region duals.
"This is a pretty cool feeling," said Gillett, a junior who won regional and Anne Arundel County titles last year at Arundel High. "But the big thing is a state championship."
Hammond's Eric Yee (130) and Jose Maldonado (135) each had a pin and a decision; Steve Sessa (189) had a pin and a major decision; and two-time state champion Vince Taweel (140) returned from a shoulder injury to record a pin against River Hill.
River Hill's No. 2-ranked Taylor Green (152), a two-time state runner-up, improved to 24-0 with a pin and a technical fall..
