'Sweet' opens eyes at Laurel

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Sweetnorthernsaint charged down the Laurel Park stretch through the fog yesterday, pulling away to a 10-length victory in the $75,000 Miracle Wood Stakes and stamping himself as a horse to watch among those eligible for the Triple Crown.

Mario Pino rode the son of Sweetsouthernsaint over the sloppy track in 1 minute, 38.69 seconds for the mile. Vegas Play rallied to take second, and Sierra Quorum finished third.

Mike Trombetta trains Sweetnorthernsaint.

Said Pino: "That was fun. I don't get too excited, but all I can say is 'Wow.' ... This is the best 3-year-old I have ever ridden, and for a horse that is only going to get better, that is saying a lot."

Note -- Because of a shortage of entries stemming from restrictions related to the equine herpes virus, live racing at Laurel is canceled today and will resume Wednesday.
