The Orioles have claimed left-hander Brian Burres, 24, off waivers from the Giants. Don't pretend you've never heard of him. He went 9-6 with a 4.20 ERA in 26 games at Double-A Norwich and was 5-2 with a 2.11 ERA in 11 games in May and June.
Still not sure? He was drafted in the 31st round in 2000 and made the Single-A California League All-Star team in 2004, going 12-1 with a league-leading 2.84 ERA. He's 32-21 with a 3.84 ERA in five minor league seasons.
Oh come on, you're not even trying! The Orioles have placed Burres on the 40-man roster. I don't think they've invited him to FanFest.
It might not be too difficult for Burres to make the club at some point next season, given John Parrish's Tommy John surgery. The only projected left-handers in the bullpen on Opening Day are Tim Byrdak and Eric DuBose.
Meanwhile, Virginia Tech has dismissed quarterback Marcus Vick from the football team. I hear he left kicking and screaming. Or at least kicking.
