Rocks State Park visitors cautioned after beaver bites

According to the Harford County Health Department, several people were bitten by a beaver at Deer Creek in Rocks State Park on Aug. 12 to 14.

An aggressive beaver was captured, and tested positive for rabies. Because there is a possibility that other rabid animals are in the area, extreme caution should be exercised by people walking or playing around Deer Creek until the matter is resolved.

Those exposed would require rabies vaccination to minimize the risk of contracting the disease. Those bitten or scratched by any animal should contact a local emergency room or call the Health Department.

The virus is most often transmitted by the bite of a rabid animal, but it can also be transmitted when the saliva of a rabid animal comes into contact with cuts or scratches in the skin, although it is rare.

Residents warned to avoid water in certain area

Residents are asked to avoid contact with water that might have been affected by a spill of 11,000 gallons of sewage at the Harford County Pine Road Wastewater Pumping Station in Joppa.

The warning area extends from the station to Foster Branch. Public works employees were called Aug. 4 in response to a sewer odor in the neighborhood; the source of the leak was discovered Aug. 5 and normal service was restored.

Eighteen warning signs have been posted from the location of the leak downstream to Foster Branch and will remain in place for at least 30 days.

LPGA tournament draws 100,000 to event

Attendance figures for the McDonald's LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Championship, sponsored by Coca-Cola, at the Bulle Rock Golf Club in Havre de Grace were 30 percent higher than in 2004.

The televised weeklong event, which was held June 9 to 12, drew about 100,000 spectators and generated about $5.5 million for Harford County.

Tournament officials unanimously chose the five-star course to maximize the potential to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities. This year's LPGA Championship raised $1.75 million, driving the fundraiser's 25-year total to more than $41 million.

The golf course, designed by Pete Dye, opened in 1998; it was ranked third nationally by a 2003 Zagat Survey.

More than 1 million television viewers tuned in to watch Annika Sorenstam win the tournament.

Bel Air First Fridays extended through October

The Bel Air Downtown Alliance, a nonprofit organization of business owners and citizens, has extended its First Fridays Series through October because of the popularity of the events.

The free outdoor celebrations of art and music are held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of each month on Office Street. Artists show their work on Main Street and vendors extend their store hours into the evening for late-night shopping. Red heart-shaped balloons mark the businesses participating in the event.

On Office Street, the center of the event, a different band is featured each month along with a beer garden offering beer and wine. The Al Maniscalco Quartet is scheduled to perform Sept. 2, and The Middle of the Road, a classic country and rock band, will perform Oct. 7.

Other events sponsored by the alliance include the Bel Air Chocolate Festival, the Maryland Barbecue Bash and the Outdoor Movie Series at Shamrock Park.
