On July 13, 2005, Dr. EUGENE THOMAS De LUCA of Owings Mills passed away at the age of 74 after living with Parkinson's disease for 23 years. Gene, born November 9, 1930 in Providence, RI, was the only child of the late Bessie and Eugenio De Luca. He graduated from URI on ROTC and Track scholarships and proceeded into active duty in the US Army. He transitioned to the Army National Guard and wed Aurora Nigris on June 11, 1955. Gene obtained his Masters and Doctorate of Education from the Teachers College at Columbia University. Gene taught for 12 years at Ithaca College (NY), three years at SUNY at New Paltz (NY) and finally for 16 years at Frostburg State University (MD) where he established and directed the Recreation and Parks Management Program. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Aurora Viola De Luca, their five children, Karen Senesi and husband Tim (San Antonio, TX), Gail Mouse and husband Tim (Mc Guire AFB, NJ), Tom De Luca and wife Karen (Radford, VA), Paul De Luca and wife Shellie (Reisterstown, MD), Patricia De Luca (Owings Mills, MD) and ten grandchildren. Visiting hours will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. on Friday, July 15 at Eckhardt Funeral Home, Reisterstown, MD. Viewing and procession from Eckhardt on Saturday, July 16 at 9 A.M. followed by Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glyndon, MD at 10 A.M. Interment will follow on Wednesday, July 20 at 11:30 A.M. at the Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the American Parkinson's Disease Association (1250 Hylan Boulevard, Suite 4B, Staten Island, New York 10305/ www.apdaparkinson.org) or the Rebecca Dunlop Parkinson's Disease Education and Outreach fund (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 100 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201/www.hopkinsmedicine.org) so that the work continues to strive for a cure and provide support for families living with Parkinson's.
