Book club to meet; bay program is scheduled


The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, will sponsor a meeting of its Savage Mystery Book Club at 7 p.m. July 13.

The club will discuss City of Light by Lauren Belfer. Copies of the book are available at the branch.

"The State of the Bay," a program at 7 p.m. July 12 with Patty Yergey of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, will present a recent report card about the continuing efforts to clean and restore the Chesapeake.

'You Can't Take It With You' slated today and tomorrow

The South Laurel Recreation Council Inc. will sponsor two performances for families of You Can't Take It With You by the Tent Troupe at 8 p.m. today and tomorrow on the grounds of Montpelier Mansion, on Route 197 at Montpelier Drive, in Laurel.

A children's show, Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! is planned for 1:45 p.m. tomorrow.

Performances are free and held rain or shine under the Big Top tent. Seating is provided.

Public and handicapped parking are available at the Montpelier Drive and Muirkirk Road entrances, off Route 197.

"Play Partners," a series of short programs for infants through 23-month-olds, at 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, July 13 through Aug. 3.

"Storytime Safari," programs of animal stories, songs and activities for ages 2 to 5 with an adult, are offered at 10:30 a.m. Mondays, through Aug. 8; 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, through Aug. 9; 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursdays, through Aug. 11; and 10:30 a.m. Fridays, through Aug. 12 (registration is required for this session.)

"Going to the Zoo," a program of zoo stories, songs and crafts for ages 2 to 5 with an adult, starts at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Registration is required.

"Dora's Jungle Adventure," stories, games and a jungle craft for the same age group, will be offered at 10:30 a.m. July 6. Registration is to begin July 29.

"Wild About Willy Wonka," a program for ages 8 and older, will be held at 2:30 p.m. July 7. Registration is to begin Thursday. June 30

"An Unfortunate Event," a program of Lemony Snicket activities, games and a craft for ages 8 and older, will be held at 7 p.m. July 13. Registration is to begin July 6.

Fishing is open:

Seasonal fishing is open for the public at Cash Lake at Patuxent Research Refuge and will continue through mid-October. Anglers can also fish at the refuge's North Tract entrance. Fishing permits are to be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the National Wildlife Visitor Center (301-497-5763) and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at Patuxent North Tract Contact Station (301-776-3090). Or The visitor center is off Powder Mill Road, between Route 197 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Laurel.

Community book talk:

The Savage branch library staff will hold Community Book Talk at Savage Senior Center, adjacent to the library, at 11 a.m. July 6. Members of the library staff will present good reads in a variety of favorite genres. Copies of the books will be available to borrow. The event is not for seniors only -- all are invited.
