Sun reporter wins award


A story about a Peabody Institute-trained opera singer by Sun reporter Jonathan Pitts has been named a first-place winner in an annual journalism awards contest sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Pitts, a Missouri alumnus, won the arts and entertainment category of the Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards for his story on Hyunah Yu, a young opera star whose husband was murdered. The contest judges, who evaluated stories from U.S. newspapers of all sizes, said Pitts' "story of tragedy and triumph never strikes a false note."

Pitts, 47, who has been at The Sun for five years, previously won a first-place award for the same story from the Association of American Sunday and Features Editors. The story can be found online on The Sun's Web site at
