Scale model trains
It's all aboard this weekend at the Great Scale Model and Train Show. More than 400 vendors from all over the nation will present not only trains, equipment and other accessories for purchase, but also booths selling clothing, books and DVDs. Visitors can sell their unwanted equipment at the white elephant tables as they shop.
Clinics and demonstrations throughout the day will show how to improve train-modeling skills. Rare train movies, cartoons and feature films will be shown. A large-scale train set will be on view outside the building.
The festival will be on Saturday and Sunday at the Timonium Fairgrounds in the Exhibit Building, York and Timonium roads. The event will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free for children under 12, $7 for 12 and up and $14 for a family. Admission includes the whole weekend. Call 410-730-1036 or visit www.gsmts.com.
'The Giant Peach'
Roald Dahl -- famous for his fantastical children's novels including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and The BFG -- is the author of Imagination Stage's latest production, James and the Giant Peach. Peach is a story about a boy and his friends, including a centipede, earthworm and ladybug, who must venture across the Atlantic Ocean in a peach.
The Imagination Stage promises a giant peach on stage and a lot of creative maneuvering to portray the extreme visuals of the story. Many props and different lighting techniques were taken into account to create the atmosphere of the ocean on a stage.
The show opens Saturday and runs through Aug. 14. Performances are 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday-Friday, 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 12:30 and 3:30 on Sundays. Admission is $10-$15. Imagination Stage is at 4908 Auburn Ave., Bethesda. Call 301-280-1660.
Great British cars
They are in the movies, they are in the driveways of the wealthiest people in the world, and now they are here in Maryland. The 28th annual Original British Car Day will feature Aston Martin, Jaguar and Bentley cars, to name a few.
While the event at Lilypons Water Garden will include food vendors, visitors are also invited to pack a picnic and sit by the pond. Cars on display will compete for awards, and there will be a space for cars for sale by private owners.
The event takes place Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lilypons Water Gardens, 6800 Lilypons Road in Buckeystown, off Interstate 70. Admission is $5 per car. Call 301-831-5300 or visit www.chesapeakechaptermgtclub.com.
