Mary L. Manning, 74, longtime hospital volunteer


Mary L. Manning, a homemaker and volunteer, died of kidney failure Saturday at University of Maryland Medical Center. The Owings Mills resident was 74.

Born and raised in Ocean City, the former Mary Lou Mumford was a graduate of Ocean City High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in history and English in 1953 from St. Mary's College of Maryland.

In the early 1960s, she worked for several years as a parochial school substitute teacher. She was a longtime volunteer at the university hospital.

The former Randallstown resident was accomplished at needlepoint and was an avid reader.

Mrs. Manning was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 9531 Liberty Road in Randallstown, where a memorial Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. today.

She is survived by a son, Paul R. Manning of Curtis Bay; a daughter, Katherine A. Haller of Rockville; and three grandchildren. Her marriage to Richard Manning ended in divorce.
