Bayhawks come alive in 2nd half, saddle Rattlers with 18-11 defeat

IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. - They had to shrug off the effects of a nine-hour bus ride, a six-point halftime deficit and, perhaps, a certain amount of complacency.

But once they did, the Bayhawks made it look easy, outscoring the Rochester Rattlers 14-1 during the final 22 minutes and walking off with an 18-11 Major League Lacrosse victory last night before 4,214 at Bishop Kearney High School.

Player-coach Gary Gait, Mikey Powell and Tom Marechek each scored three goals, with Gait adding three assists, to keep the Bayhawks (4-0) undefeated.

Rochester (0-4) remained winless, although for better than a half, the Rattlers gave the Bayhawks something to think about.

"We didn't come out ready to play," Powell said. "To be honest, we haven't been down before, so this was a learning experience."

The Bayhawks got a goal from Powell at the 57-second mark, then seemed to fall asleep for much of the rest of the half, when they found themselves trailing 8-2, even though Rochester was missing mainstays Casey and Ryan Powell, Mikey Powell's older brothers, who are in a legal dispute with Warrior, the league's equipment supplier, and are enjoined from playing indefinitely.

"I certainly am disappointed about not playing against them," Mikey Powell said. "It's certainly something I've wanted to do. But that will have to wait for another day. It's a shame they're not here."

Former Bayhawks player Bugsy Combs helped lead the Rattlers' offense, scoring three goals and setting up one.

Combs' first goal came with 51 seconds left in the first quarter, He whipped a low shot past Bayhawks goalie Trevor Tierney to make it 3-1.

Gait cut the margin to 3-2 at 1:55 into the second quarter, but the Bayhawks couldn't build off the score.

Just 22 seconds later, Combs set up Tim Booth to restore the Rattlers' two-goal lead.

Later, Combs scored his third of the night, making it 7-2 with 5:44 to play in the half.

Rochester goalie (and Annapolis native) Tillman Johnson pulled off the save of the game with 22 seconds left in the half, stopping a shot by Gait from point-blank range.

John Grant scored on a counterattack with 11 seconds left, sending the Bayhawks to their locker room with the six-point deficit.

But overcome it they did, outscoring their hosts 10-3 in the third period.

The onslaught continued in the final quarter, when the Bayhawks outshot the Rattlers 15-7 and outscored them 6-0.
