Harford Friends School to bring Quaker perspective

Harford Friends School appreciates the coverage by The Sun in Harford on May 22. I wish to clarify some of the information provided in that article.

As stated in its mission, "Harford Friends School brings to the community a unique educational program promoting academic excellence by developing the intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical and aesthetic aspects of each individual student." Using the Maryland State Department of Education's Voluntary State Curriculum, teachers at HFS will expertly facilitate hands-on learning and rigorous skill development in attentive classrooms of 15 or fewer students.

Belief in Divinity pervades all aspects of Quakerism. Quaker practice includes belief in "continuing revelation" - the idea that one's understanding of and relationship to the Divine is always evolving. This fits well into Friends Schools' tradition of academic excellence, where pursuit of new knowledge is essential.

The school will seek accreditation, once eligible through Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Harford Friends School is an Applicant Member to Friends Council on Education. FCE assists in the establishment of new Friends schools and nurtures the Quaker life of established schools such as Friends School of Baltimore. Friends Council assures that schools operate in accordance with the tenets of Quakerism - community, equality, simplicity, harmony and integrity.

Those involved with Harford Friends are excited about the opportunities available to area students and families. The school looks forward to offering a full K-12 program that makes a positive difference for students and the community for years to come.

In peace,

Jonathan Huxtable Head of School
