THE QUESTION: IF I BUY A PUPPY FROM A NEIGHBOR OR A FRIEND, DOES IT NEED TO BE REGISTERED WITH THE STATE?

All cats and dogs four months and older must have an Anne Arundel County license and must wear metal tags issued by the state. The license costs $15 a year for unspayed animals and $4 a year if they are spayed. (There is no fee for Seeing Eye dogs or special assistance dogs.)

In order to obtain a license, the owner must show proof that the pet had a rabies shot. The county's Animal Control Facility administers rabies vaccinations at a clinic from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays. The cost is $5. Call 410-222-8900 before coming. The facility is at 411 Maxwell Frye Road in Millersville.
