ROCKVILLE - The old and the young - one apiece - systematically worked their ways through two rounds and into the championship pairing of the 84th Maryland State Amateur at Norbeck Country Club yesterday.
Dave Rasley, of Four Streams and at 57 the oldest player in the draw, turned back Michael Perlmutter, a Landon School senior from Redgate GC, 3 and 2, and Mike Mitchell, 25, won four of the first six holes and was never threatened in beating Tim Kane, 5 and 4, to set the stage for this morning's 36-hole final.
Rasley, who won the event twice in the 1990s, showed no signs of health problems that have bothered him in the past, as he was 1-under par against Perlmutter and did not lose a hole until he was 3-up through the 12th. He had five birdies in the morning but lost a 2-up advantage in the middle of the nine, before winning with a long two-putt par against Grayson Hanes (Congressional CC) on the final hole.
The turning point in the afternoon match was the eighth green, where Perlmutter was on in two and Rasley was bunkered and wound up making bogey. His opponent then three-putted to get only a half instead of a possible win that would have left him only 1-down.
"My putting has really improved," said Rasley of a new crouched stance. "Before, I was 50-50 to make it from a foot, but now I can really see the line."
Rasley finished 1-under and Perlmutter 3-over.
Perlmutter had put out James Madison University senior Joe Scheffres (Woodmont CC), 3 and 1, in the morning.
Mitchell (Columbia CC) was 3-under in building a 6-up margin on Kane through 10 holes, then made his first two bogeys of the day. A winning par at the 14th closed it out.
In the morning, Mitchell won only two holes, but Ray Sheedy (Wakefield Valley) didn't win any in a 2-and-1 decision.
"My play was consistent all day until those two bogeys," Mitchell said. "Whenever I play tournaments like this, it takes me two or three rounds to get my feel, my rhythm."
In the morning, Kane, 22, of University of Maryland GC beat Chris Connolly of Chevy Chase Club, 3 and 2.
