Water quality readings available online, by phone
Water sampling results from 101 county beaches are now available online and by phone through Labor Day.
Anyone can log on to www.aa health.org or call 410-222-7999 for water quality information. The Web site and phone line also alert for emergency closings on beaches and waterways.
In cases of emergency closings, the areas stated are closed to recreational uses such as swimming and other water sports.
Focus group forming on smoking habits
The county Department of Health is seeking African-American smokers and ex-smokers for focus group research. All participants must be county residents and be between 18 and 34 years old. Men and women are needed for the study.
The groups will meet for two hours in the evening in the Annapolis and Glen Burnie areas. Members will discuss their attempts at quitting, experiences with smoking and opinions of smoking cessation materials.
Groups will meet this month and next. Meals will be provided and each participant will receive $50. 410-222-7979.

Medical center urgently needs blood donations
Anne Arundel Medical Center is urgently seeking blood donations. Although some hospitals purchase blood or use donations from the Red Cross, AAMC depends solely on donations made at the hospital. The hospital's blood bank is open for donations from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday; 8:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Thursday; and 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Friday. American Red Cross offers CPR, first-aid classes
Courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid have been scheduled for this month at sites in Anne Arundel County by American Red Cross of Central Maryland. They include:
Adult CPR, teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedure and rescue for victims 8 and older. It is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, 345 Pike Ridge Road, Edgewater; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 25, Severna Park; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 25, Edgewater. Cost: $37.
Adult, Infant and Child CPR: comprehensive CPR course trains for CPR on adult, infant and child victims, including rescue breathing, clearing obstructed airway and one-rescuer CPR. The classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 25, Severna Park. Cost: $42.
Adult CPR and First Aid Basics: learn rescue breathing, how to clear an obstructed airway and perform one-rescuer CPR on victims 8 and older. Course also includes first-aid basics on how to treat life-threatening bleeding, burns, fractures, shock and sudden illness. The course will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25, Edgewater. Cost: $42.

Hospital offers program on joint replacement
Specialists from Advanced Orthopedics at North Arundel Hospital will offer Joint School to provide participants with a free opportunity to learn more about total joint replacement therapy.
The program is being offered at 4 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the Courtney Conference Center on the lower level of the Tate Center at North Arundel Hospital.
The program explains joint replacement surgery and gives those who are contemplating such surgery an opportunity to ask questions and receive information on what to expect.
