Cubs say tape shows Sosa left 2nd game early

THE BALTIMORE SUN

CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs not only have video of Sammy Sosa leaving Wrigley Field during the first inning of the final day of the 2004 season, a team spokesman said Wednesday, but they also have video of him leaving during the middle innings of a game Sept. 7.

Sosa was unavailable to pinch-hit in the 12-inning, 7-6 loss to the Montreal Expos but also, according to the team's Web site, was sitting out a second straight game with bursitis in a hip.

Cubs management didn't make an issue of that incident, but Sosa was fined one day's pay for the second incident. The fine was rescinded when he was traded to the Orioles.

Sosa said in Sports Illustrated that there was no surveillance video of him leaving the parking lot the last game of the season.

The Cubs spokesman said Wednesday that the video cameras in the parking lot are turned on daily, and Sosa's exit was recorded like any other scene that takes place there. The organization has not released the video or still frames to prove its existence and is unlikely to do so with Sosa gone.
