Player of the Year

Steve Johnson, St. Paul's

Johnson capped a record-breaking four-year career as the only four-time All-Metro baseball player. He went 10-2 with a 1.27 ERA and led the No. 4 Crusaders with a .485 average, 33 runs and a state record 19 doubles.

Johnson was 34-6 for his career, the second-most wins in state history, and his 331 strikeouts rank fifth all-time.

Named the Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year, Johnson, who pitched a no-hitter and perfect game this season, also set state career records for runs (147), hits (156) and doubles (41).

Coach of the Year

Lou Eckerl, Calvert Hall

Eckerl led the Cardinals to their first Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title since 2000 and a 31-1 record, a state record for wins.

Eckerl handled his pitching staff well and put his confidence in an underclass middle infield in junior second baseman Pat Carmen and freshman shortstop Kevin Lingerman.
