Performer of the Year

Robin Yerkes, Broadneck

The junior nearly carried the Bruins to their sixth consecutive county title. Forty of Broadneck's 68 points came from Yerkes, who claimed the 100-meter dash in 12.1 seconds, the 200 in 25.0, the 100 high hurdles in 16.1 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 47.0.

Her performance made her the first female athlete to win four individual events at the county championships since Severna Park's Karen Taylor did so in the early 1980s.

Yerkes also took the 100 (12.2), the 200 (26.0) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (47.0) at the Class 4A East regional meet. She finished in the top eight in all three events at the state championships.

Coach of the Year

Ed Purpura, Severna Park

The Falcons ended a 25-year drought at the county championships by winning the crown this season.

Armed with a plethora of middle- and long-distance runners, Purpura developed a cadre of jumpers to add critical points in the victory. Severna Park went on to capture the Class 3A South regional crown before falling at the state meet.
