Phoebe L. Kelly, a retired high school field hockey and tennis coach, died of pneumonia related to cancer May 31 at Chester River Hospital Center in Chestertown. The Church Hill resident was 60.
Born Phoebe Lorine Williams in Fort Jackson, S.C., she was a graduate of Lock Haven State University in Lock Haven, Pa., where she was named best senior athlete.
She taught physical education in Chalfont, Pa., before moving to Cape St. Claire and teaching at Annapolis High School for a year. In the early 1980s, she became field hockey and tennis coach at Broadneck High School, and also taught health and sports medicine.
Mrs. Kelly retired in 2003 after lung cancer was diagnosed. Broadneck's hockey field is being named in her honor.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. June 18 at St. Andrew by the Bay Roman Catholic Church, 701 College Parkway, Cape St. Claire.
Survivors include her husband of nearly 38 years, J. Brian Kelly; a son, Brian F. Kelly of Walkersville; a daughter, Lorine Kelly Hawthorne of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Edward Williams of Hagerstown; a sister, Charlene McElhaney of Doylestown, Pa.; and a granddaughter.
