System shuffles principals at many schools

The Anne Arundel County school system announced a large wave of new principals last week, with more predicted in coming months.

One middle school and seven elementary schools will have first-time principals in the fall. Seven other elementary principals have been reassigned.

Two of the moves resulted from promotions to the school system's headquarters. Christopher Truffer, principal of Old Mill Middle North in Millersville, will become a director of middle schools; George Lindley, assistant principal of Glen Burnie's Marley Middle School, will replace him.

Gambrills' Four Seasons Elementary School Principal Lorna Leone will become an elementary school director, and Principal Sharon Ferralli of Lake Shore Elementary in Pasadena will replace her.

Retirements prompted three other changes, and more can be expected in the next few years given the aging of the baby boom generation.

Nearly a third of the county's 303 principals and assistant principals were eligible to retire in April, said Florie Bozzella, the school system's acting director of human resources.

School districts around the nation have similar statistics. A 2003 study by the nonprofit Rand Corp. found that the average age of public school principals nationwide had increased from 47.8 to 49.3 from 1987 to 2000.

The study also found that public schools were less likely to hire a principal younger than 40 than they have been in the past. As a result, new hires tend to start their jobs closer to retirement age.

Anne Arundel County is not facing a critical shortage, but "I do think that's going to become an issue," Bozzella said.

Other moves in Anne Arundel County include:

Van Bokkelen Elementary School Assistant Principal Julie Little McVearry to principal of North Glen Elementary.

Glendale Elementary School Assistant Principal Melissa Brown to principal of Deale Elementary.

Donna Pergerson, assistant principal at Glen Burnie Park and Brock Bridge elementaries, to principal of Pershing Hill Elementary.

Rippling Woods Elementary School Assistant Principal Janine Robinson to principal of Woodside Elementary.

Germantown Elementary School Assistant Principal Donna Spencer to principal of Lake Shore Elementary.

Marley Elementary School Assistant Principal Donna Williman to principal there.

Four Seasons Elementary School Assistant Principal Christopher Wooleyhand to principal of Hillsmere Elementary.

Pershing Hill Elementary School Principal Karen Bailey to principal of Point Pleasant Elementary.

Deale Elementary Principal M. Michele Batten to principal of Georgetown East Elementary.

Georgetown East Principal Susan Errichiello to principal of Piney Orchard Elementary.

North Glen Elementary Principal Maurine Larkin to principal of Odenton Elementary.

Hillsmere Elementary School Principal Andrea Rose to principal of Van Bokkelen Elementary.

Odenton Elementary Principal Robert Wagner to principal of Solley Elementary.

More new principal assignments are expected to be announced in the next few months.
