Hospital has urgent need for blood donations

Anne Arundel Medical Center is urgently seeking blood donations. Although some hospitals purchase blood or use donations from the Red Cross, AAMC depends solely on donations made at the hospital. The hospital's blood bank is open for donations from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday; 8:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Thursday; and 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Friday. Any healthy adult is eligible to donate. Appointments: 443- 481-4215.

American Red Cross offers CPR, first-aid classes

Courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid have been scheduled for this month at sites in Anne Arundel County by American Red Cross of Central Maryland. They include:

Adult CPR, teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedure and rescue for victims 8 and older. It is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Stanton Community Center, 92 W. Washington St., Annapolis; 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 14, 345 Pike Ridge Road, Edgewater; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 25, Severna Park; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 25, Edgewater. Cost: $37.

First Aid Basics trains participants to identify and care for victims of illness and sudden injuries. You will learn how to control bleeding, minimize the effects of shock, and care for muscularskeletal injuries and sudden illness due to heat and cold and other emergencies. This course does not include adult CPR. The class will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday, at Edgwater. Cost: $35.

Adult, Infant and Child CPR: comprehensive CPR course trains for CPR on adult, infant and child victims, including rescue breathing, clearing obstructed airway and one-rescuer CPR. The classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 25, Severna Park. Cost: $42.

Adult CPR and First Aid Basics: learn rescue breathing, to clear an obstructed airway, perform one-rescuer CPR on victims 8 and older. Course also includes first aid basics on how to treat life-threatening bleeding, burns, fractures, shock and sudden illness. The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Severna Park; Saturday, Annapolis; 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 14 and 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., June 16, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 25, Edgewater. Cost: $42.

Infant and Child CPR: teaches emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and CPR for infants and children from birth to age 8. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Edgewater, and June 18, Severna Park. Cost: $37.

Infant and Child CPR and First Aid, including infant and child CPR certification, emphasizing first aid for those who work in child care settings. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Edgewater, and June 18, Severna Park. Cost: $42.

CPR for the Professional Rescuer, an advanced course for those with a job-related duty - law enforcement officer, life guard, health care professional - to act in an emergency situation. Meets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 18, Edgewater Red Cross. Cost: $45. All courses are on a first-come, first-served basis, and advance registration with payment is required. Hospital offers program on joint replacement

Specialists from Advanced Orthopedics at North Arundel Hospital will offer Joint School to provide participants with a free opportunity to learn more about total joint replacement therapy.

The program is being offered at 4 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the Courtney Conference Center on the lower level of the Tate Center at North Arundel Hospital.

The program explains joint replacement surgery and gives those who are contemplating such surgery an opportunity to ask questions and receive information on what to expect during preparation and recovery.

Health training workshops:

The county Health Department will offer workshops for child care providers and preschool staff from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Severna Park library, 45 McKinsey Road. Dietary guidelines and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will be discussed. Parents are welcome. 410-222-7384.

Rabies alert:

Because of a significant increase in rabies cases in the county, residents are urged to have their pets vaccinated. Rabies vaccinations may be obtained at a nominal cost from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thurdays at the Animal Control facility, 411 Maxwell Frye Road, Millersville. 410-222-1288.

Weight seminar:

Asthma summer camp:

Support group:

A new support group for spouses and significant others of recently diagnosed breast cancer patients is being offered by Anne Arundel Medical Center the second Wednesday of every month from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday at the Breast Center Library in the Sajak Pavilion. 410-481-5318.

Alcoholics Anonymous:

Weight management:
