THIS MONTH IN COUNTY HISTORY

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Howard County earned its first state baseball championship June 4, 1983, when Glenelg used a five-run second inning en route to an 8-7 victory over Williamsport at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Greg Smith, who went on to play in the Chicago Cubs organization, hit a three-run double in the second inning, and Tim Miles followed with a home run to propel the Gladiators (18-4).

Williamsport pitcher Denny Wallech, who struck out 11, lost his first game of the season. His wild pitch in the sixth inning allowed Barry Boone to reach second base and later score what proved to be the deciding run on a Smith single.

Glenelg has captured five state baseball titles - 1983, 1993, 1995, 1998, 1999. Other state baseball champions from the county include Atholton (2002) and Centennial (2001, 2004).
