Chris Crum

Severna Park, baseball

The senior third baseman helped lead the No. 3 Falcons to their second state championship in three seasons with victories over Frederick and Wilde Lake. The third-year starter improved his pitching record to 7-0 with two saves and a 1.15 ERA, with opposing batters hitting .142 against him. Crum batted .486 this season, with 26 RBIs, 30 runs, 11 doubles, a triple and four home runs.

In an 8-2, three-hit win over Frederick in the Class 3A semifinal, Crum struck out eight. He also went 1-for-2, was hit by a pitch and scored a run. In the Falcons' 9-0, state title-winning effort over Wilde Lake, Crum was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Playing third base in that game, Crum had two assists and three putouts.

Crum, who is 6 feet, 185 pounds, helped the Falcons go 22-4. An All-Metro third baseman as a junior, he is headed to Virginia Tech on a baseball scholarship.

Beth Mullins

North County, softball

With the No. 1 Knights' 4-2 extra-inning win over Damascus in the Class 4A championship game on Saturday, the senior became only the fifth pitcher in state history to win three state title games. She allowed six hits in eight innings, leading the North County program to its fourth state title in six years. Mullins led North County to the title game with a three-hit, 13-strikeout performance in a 3-0 semifinal win over defending champion Westminster on Thursday.

A regular on the All-Metro team since her freshman year, Mullins, who mixes a tantalizing changeup with her power pitches, went 14-3 this season with an 0.36 ERA and 150 strikeouts in 136 innings. Batting third in the Knights' lineup, she hit .364 and finished with 12 RBIs.
