Richard Israel, a former assistant attorney general, announced yesterday at Reynolds Tavern on Church Circle that he will run as a Democratic candidate for alderman on the Annapolis city council.
Israel, a 30-year resident of the city's 1st Ward, is running for the seat occupied by Democrat Louise Hammond. Israel and his campaign advisers say they expect the seat to be open in the fall election.
Israel, 62, has served as a volunteer on the city's Historic District Commission and as president of the Murray Hill Residents Association. He retired from the state attorney general's office in 2003. This is his first run for elective office.
