On February 5, 2005, MADELEINE (Skirven) FRANCE, age 93, formerly of Country Meadows Nursing Center in Bethlehem, PA. Mrs. France was born in Baltimore, MD. She was the wife of the late Ralph H. France. She was the daughter of the late Theresa K. and William L. Skirven and the niece of the late composer Franz C. Bornchein and his wife, the late songstress, Hazel Knox Bornchein. Mrs. France graduated from Eastern High School in 1927. She was a graduate of Goucher College in 1931 and was the class President for over 20 years. She received her Master's Degree from Johns Hopkins University in Biology. She was head of the Biology Dept. of both Edmondson High School and Northern High School, both of Baltimore, MD. Mrs. France was on the board of trustees for Goucher College. She was a member of St. John's of Hamilton United Methodist Church. She was a member of Baltimore Figure Skating and was a nationally rated Judge. She served in the United States Naval Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. Mrs. France is survived by her step-son, the Honorable Ralph H. France, II of Hagerstown, MD, two step-daughters Mrs. Suzanne Light of Nazareth, PA, Mrs. Jeanne Hvidding of Easton, PA and six grandchildren. Services are private. Arrangements care of Downing Funeral Home, Inc., Bethlehem, PA. Memorial donations may be sent in honor of Mrs. France to Goucher College, 1021 Dulaney Valley Rd., Baltimore, MD 21204
