Delectable waffles made with sour cream

Charlotte Whitenight of Baltimore was looking for the recipe that she lost for sour-cream waffles that came in the recipe booklet with her Vitantonio waffle maker. Fortunately, several readers still had their original recipe and instruction books for the waffle maker.

Carol Hendricks from Santa Rosa, Calif., bought her Vitantonio waffle maker 22 years ago and now is making these delectable waffles for her grandchildren.

Although good frozen waffles are now readily available, there is something special about making a batch of these homemade goodies. Of course they are terrific for breakfast, but they also can be made for dessert when served with whipped cream or ice cream and fresh fruit.

Recipe requests

Marcia Wojcik from Amsterdam, N.Y., is looking for a favorite chicken recipe that she had but lost. It was clipped from Good Housekeeping Magazine in the mid-'70s. The recipe appeared in an advertisement for Holland House white cooking wine. The chicken pieces were sauteed in a large skillet with onions, mushrooms and the cooking wine.

Edna Doyle of Carney is trying to fine a recipe for Graham-Cracker Pie.

Sour-Cream Waffles

Makes 6

3 eggs, separated

3/4 cup milk

1/2 cup melted butter or margarine

1 teaspoon vanilla

3/4 cup sour cream

1 1/2 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Beat egg yolks in a large bowl. Beat milk, melted butter, vanilla and sour cream. Combine flour, salt and other dry ingredients.

Sift into egg mixture and beat well. Beat egg whites until stiff. Carefully fold into batter. Bake and serve with desired topping.

Per serving: 364 calories; 8 grams protein; 25 grams fat; 15 grams saturated fat; 27 grams carbohydrate; 1 gram fiber; 161 milligrams cholesterol; 635 milligrams sodium
