Fugitive in Howard is shot, killed during raid

A 20-year-old man who had been on the run since eluding authorities on New Year's Eve at Howard County General Hospital was fatally shot Friday night when he used a car to try to run over several officers during a raid, Howard County police said.

Officers located Jejuan Deon Griffin earlier in the day at the Copper Stallion Motel in the 7600 block of Washington Blvd. in Elkridge. County detectives and members of a tactical unit returned about 10 p.m. to arrest him.

Griffin, who had lived at various addresses in Laurel, was killed a short time later as he tried to run over several officers, police said. Officials were unavailable yesterday to give further details about the incident.

Griffin had been jailed at the Howard County Detention Center in Jessup on charges that included drug distribution.

On Dec. 31, correctional guards left Griffin alone in a bathroom at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia. He slipped out of his leg irons and left through an adjoining door. County police officers, aided by dogs and a helicopter, searched the area around the hospital for several hours.
