Frederick man injured by falling granite slabs
A Frederick man was seriously injured early Wednesday when two large slabs of granite knocked him from a truck platform in Edgewater, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday.
The accident occurred about 11 a.m., as John Joseph Smith III, 29, stood on the flatbed of the commercial vehicle, according to police reports.
Police said he was attempting to loosen straps securing the half-ton sheets of rock to the vehicle when the slabs moved, pushing him off the truck and into the front of a nearby forklift.
Smith suffered severe head trauma and was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center, police said. Hospital officials were unable to say what his condition was late yesterday.
Police said the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health agency is investigating.
