Haverford men edge Johns Hopkins, 82-80, on layup at buzzer in overtime


Senior Mark Gabriel scored a career-high 34 points and hit a layup as time expired in overtime to lift the Haverford College men's basketball team to an 82-80 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins last night.

The Fords (3-7, 2-3 Centennial Conference) won for the second time in their past three games, while the Blue Jays (6-5, 3-2) had a three-game winning streak broken.

After a 73-73 tie at the end of regulation, the Blue Jays scored the first four points of overtime. But the Fords scored seven points in the final 53 seconds for the win.

Terence Coppola led the Blue Jays with 19 points and hit four of seven from three-point range.

Swarthmore 65, McDaniel 62: Kyle O'Connor led the Green Terror (3-9, 1-4 Centennial) with 13 points as they fell to the host Garnets (2-10, 1-4).

Gettysburg 78, Washington College 62: Junior guard Kyle Stem led the Shoremen (5-7, 2-3 Centennial) with 17 points in the loss to the host Bullets (6-6, 3-2).


Gettysburg 74, Washington College 47: Sophomore guard LaToya Turner scored a team-high 12 points for the Shorewomen (2-10, 1-5 Centennial). She also had six rebounds and a game-high five steals. The host Bullets improved to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

McDaniel 80, Bryn Mawr 54: Kristy Costa scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead the visiting Green Terror (11-2, 6-1 Centennial) over the Owls (0-12, 0-7).
