Annapolis police say officers shot and killed two pit bulls that were involved in a staged dogfight yesterday afternoon.
According to a news release issued by police spokesman Officer Hal Dalton, the incident took place in a common area between Harbour House and Eastport Terrace - two public housing complexes near President and Madison streets.
Dalton reported that officers witnessed the two dogs fighting but were unable to apprehend two men who appeared to be their handlers.
After the men ran, the dogs continued to fight while unattended.
The release said the officers shot the "very vicious" dogs after several unsuccessful attempts to separate and control the animals.
