Martha Lois Brown, 84, volunteer, boat enthusiast


Martha Lois Brown, a former Baltimore homemaker and powerboat enthusiast, died Wednesday of respiratory failure at her home in Martinsburg, Pa. She was 84 and lived at the Village at Morrisons Cove.

Martha Wineland was born in rural Martinsburg and graduated in 1938 from Morrisons Cove High School.

In 1941, she married Hollis R. Brown and moved to Northeast Baltimore. She returned to her hometown after the death of Mr. Brown in 2002.

She was a member of the Baltimore Yacht Club and the Sue Island Power Squadron, and a volunteer at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Towson.

In Baltimore, Mrs. Brown was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church. In Martinsburg, she was a member of the Memorial Church of the Brethren, where funeral services were held yesterday.

She is survived by a son, Hollis R. Brown Jr. of Kingwood, Texas; a brother, George H. Wineland of Roaring Spring, Pa.; two sisters, her twin, Lucille Honsaker of Martinsburg, and Alice Evelyn Meadows of Hollidaysburg, Pa.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A daughter, Susan Brown Stare, died in 1996.
