Loyola's tip-in tops VMI, 70-69

THE BALTIMORE SUN

New Loyola College coach Jimmy Patsos has spent the early part of the season trying to teach the Greyhounds how to overcome youth, a stacked schedule and a recent tradition of losing.

Facing Virginia Military last night at Reitz Arena, Loyola had to overcome yet another obstacle - blown leads.

The Greyhounds lost advantages of 12 points at the outset and nine points with 10 minutes to play before forward Josko Alujevic tipped in Linton Hinds' miss with 9.4 seconds left to give Loyola a dramatic, 70-69 win.

"The kids have been believing," said Patsos, a former assistant at Maryland. "I told them at halftime, 'You've got to do whatever it takes to win.' "

Freshman guard Brad Farrell took those words to heart, scoring 18 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, including Loyola's first dunk of the season. He did the bulk of his damage by beating slower defenders for either layups or short jumpers.

"I just went out there and played," Farrell said. "There were just some matchups where there was a big man on the side, and I just thought I could drive by him, so I did."

Another freshman, guard Freddie Stanback, and Alujevic each added 12 points for the Greyhounds (2-9), who broke a four-game losing streak heading into Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

VMI (5-5), which earlier this season defeated Navy and lost to Towson, answered Loyola each time the Greyhounds looked to take control.

After Stanback scored nine points in the Greyhounds' opening, 13-1 run, VMI came out with renewed energy, scoring 17 of the next 19 points, including four straight free throws after Loyola's bench was hit with a technical.

When forward Preston Beverly scored on a turnaround jumper midway through the half, the Keydets were up 18-15.

Later in the first period, VMI, led by forward Reggie Williams (18 points), answered Loyola's 10-0 run to pull even at halftime.

In the second half, however, Farrell and Loyola began to turn the tide.
