A Baltimore teenager has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder in the shooting and wounding of a man early Sunday morning in Pioneer City, Anne Arundel police said yesterday.
Laronte Lee Richardson, 18, of the 900 block of First St. in Baltimore also is charged with assault, reckless endangerment and other offenses. He is accused of firing several shots at a man who was walking near Pioneer Drive and Arwell Court, said police spokesman Sgt. Shawn Urbas.
Police say Derrick D. Poole, 35, of Pioneer Drive was cutting through an open lot near his home about 3 a.m. when a young man wearing a dark coat and knit hat began shooting at him.
Police don't think they knew each other.
Poole tried to flee the area and was hit once in the leg as he ran. Wounded, he stopped at a nearby house for help and was then taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was treated and released, police said.
Officers found Richardson several hours later in a home on Arwell Court, along with a handgun and $2,800 worth of crack cocaine, police said.
Police also have charged Richardson with possession of drugs with intent to distribute and related weapons offenses, Urbas said.
Richardson was being held without bail last night at the county detention center.
According to police and court records, Richardson was arrested last year in the same neighborhood after officers serving a warrant found him and another teen with guns and $7,400 worth of crack cocaine inside a home on Pioneer Drive.
In that case, police searched the home after witnesses saw Richardson and the other juvenile male fire gunshots into the air just outside the house, police said.
Both were charged as adults with possession of drugs and related handgun violations. Richardson pleaded guilty to the handgun charge and was cleared of the other offenses. He is currently on probation.
