Mount Hebron Viking Backers offer SAT Prep courses for March exam


The Mount Hebron Viking Backers will sponsor SAT Prep courses to prepare students for the March SAT examinations.

Ninety-minute sessions, taught by Marian McCain, former mathematics and SAT prep teacher at Centennial High School, will be held from Jan. 6 to March 10 at Mount Hebron High School.

Based on their PSAT results, students can choose mathematics, reading comprehension or writing classes, which will be offered Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The cost is $280 for mathematics or reading comprehension; $170 for writing. A combination of two classes costs $390.

Geometry is a prerequisite for the mathematics classes.

Miller library branch offers sign language club

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, sponsors a sign language club from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Led by lifelong ASL speaker Esther Armstrong-Allen, the weekly session will teach teens and adults about American Sign Language and the culture of the hearing impaired.

Air Force Airman Jesse A. Just, son of Gary Just of Ellicott City and Carla Rich of Louisville, Ky., has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 1998 graduate of Jefferson County High School in Louisville.

Holiday food drive:

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring its 14th annual Christmas holiday food drive to benefit needy families in the Elkridge area. Food and monetary donations, which are tax-deductible, are welcome. Checks should be made out to the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Christmas Food Drive. Donations can be taken to the fire station, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge. Senior art:

Drawing and painting classes for those age 55 and older will be offered at the Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center at 10 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Mondays, starting Jan. 10. Participants will work in various media. A supply list will be discussed at the first class. Materials, which must be purchased separately, cost about $50. The two-hour class will run for 10 weeks. Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is offering bridge classes with Ruth-Anne Mazer, a popular instructor and Gold Life Master of the game. Bridge for Beginners will be offered from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Mondays starting Jan. 10 at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road. The cost is $35 for an eight-week course. Bridge Brush-Up will be offered from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays starting Jan. 12 at the Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center, 10481 Frederick Road, Ellicott City. The eight-week class costs $35. Bid and Play, which requires Bridge Brush-Up as a prerequisite or the instructor's approval, will focus on bidding and playing techniques with pre-dealt hands. Driver's ed:

The Mount Hebron High School Viking Backers group is sponsoring driver education classes that meet the requirements of Maryland law. Afternoon classes for the 30-hour classroom portion of the course will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. starting Feb. 14, March 7, April 11 and May 9. Each session includes two weeks of classroom instruction. An evening session is planned for April 11 to 22. A six-hour behind-the-wheel instruction session will be scheduled individually. Students must be at least 15 years and 5 months old to enroll. Instructors from Top Driver will teach the classes, which are open to all Howard County students. The cost is $335.
