St. John Catholic Church will hold a "Come and See Evening" at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the new church sanctuary at 43 Monroe St. in Westminster.
The program is for anyone coming back to their Catholic faith, wanting to learn more about what the Catholic Church teaches and believes, or seeking to follow Christ more fully.
Tours of the new church will be offered.
Unitarian church offers classes to the public
Cedarhurst Unitarian Universalist Church in Finksburg is offering the following classes:
The Three Treasures Taiji and Chi Quong class is offering instruction to anyone interested in the Old Northern Yang Taiji and Chi Quong classes. The class is held at 6:30 p.m. Mondays and taught by Bruce Payne and Maureen Harvey. Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothes; shoes are optional. The cost is $5 per session.
The Buddhist Teachings class will meet for six weeks at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 6. The focus will be on understanding the "three jewels" - Buddha, Dharma and Sangha - which are enlightened being, teaching and community. The Rev. Henry Simoni-Wastila, pastor at CUU, will lead the course. The class is free, but participants should obtain a copy of The Experience of Buddhism: Sources and Interpretations, by John S. Strong. The church is at 2912 Club House Road.
Westminster library offers book clubs and story times
Westminster branch library, 50 E. Main St., will offer:
"Sleigh Bells Ring" at 1 p.m. tomorrow for all ages. Stories and songs will ring in the new year.
Family Story Time for all ages (children 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 1 p.m. Thursday on "Mice are Nice."
Book Discussion Club for adults at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 5 to discuss The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom.
"Stamping Valentines" for teens and adults at 7 p.m. Jan. 6. Participants will make a Valentine card and gift bag. Registration is required.
Junior Book Club for ages 7 to 10 at 4 p.m. Jan. 12 to discuss Cliff Hanger by Gloria Skurzynski.
"Let's Talk Classics" for teens and adults at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 to discuss Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov.
Nonfiction Book Club for adults at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 to discuss The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson and at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 to discuss The Oath: A Surgeon Under Fire by Khassan Baiev and others.
Tarr reports for duty at naval station in Fla.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Justin T. Tarr recently reported for duty at Naval Station Mayport, Fla.
Tarr, the son of James G. Tarr of Westminster, is a 1997 graduate of Westminster High School. He joined the Navy in August 2000.
