Ellicott City church's final Advent Vesper service is Wednesday
First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3604 Chatham Road, Ellicott City, will hold its final Advent Vesper service, with lessons and Christmas carols, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The church will celebrate four Christmas Eve services Dec. 24. A 5 p.m. children's service will include lessons, carols, and performances by the puppet group Christian Critters and the youth orchestra. The homily will be "The Truth of the Night."
Communion services will be held at 7 p.m., 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., and will include preaching and performances by the church choirs.
The 2,100-member congregation has a wheelchair-accessible worship space. Large-print hymnals and worship bulletins are available, as are sound enhancers for the hearing-impaired.

Taize Prayer to be held Wednesday in Columbia
St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church and Lutheran Church of the Living Word will sponsor Taize Prayer from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and monthly through June in the chapel at Oakland Mills Interfaith Center, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia.
The meditative chants, which originated with the Brothers of Taize in France, are often sung simultaneously in several languages.

Light from the darkness is Journeys Community theme
The theme for Journeys Community's 10 a.m. Sunday service will be "In the midst of the darkness, there came a bright light: At this season, a light shines out of the winter darkness. Each of us can be the light that brightens and transforms our world."
Journeys Community services are held in the auditorium on the second floor of Vantage House Life Care Retirement Community, 5400 Vantage Point Road in Town Center, Columbia.

Columbia congregation to gather Christmas Eve
Christ Memorial Presbyterian Church, 6410 Amherst Ave., Columbia, will hold Christmas Eve worship services at 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Dec. 24.
The 5 p.m. service will be family-oriented, with children and youth choirs, drama and puppet troupes, hand-chime and guitar choirs. An outdoor live Nativity will be held immediately before and after the service.
The 8:30 p.m. service is more traditional, with an adult choir, vocal solos, duets, ensembles and a hand-bell choir. A half-hour of music is to begin at 8 p.m.
Christmas concert, sing-along scheduled
The Church of the Resurrection, 3175 Paulskirk Drive, Ellicott City, will present a Christmas concert and sing-along at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The program, which is free and open to everyone, will feature contemporary and traditional carols, a children's choir and brass ensemble.

'Christmas for Kids' to be held tomorrow
Christ Lutheran Church will present "Christmas for Kids," an afternoon of Christmas stories, games crafts and songs, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at the River Hill meeting room, 6330 Trotter Road.
Children, kindergarten through fifth grade, can enjoy the program, which focuses on the meaning of the holiday for children, while parents prepare for the holiday. Lunch will be provided.
Admission is free. Registration is requested.
'Rethinking God, Religion' scheduled as topic Sunday
Channing Memorial Church, Unitarian Universalist, will sponsor a panel discussion on the theologies that contribute to Unitarian Universalism, "Rethinking God and Religion," at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church office, 3230 Bethany Lane, Suite 4, Ellicott City.
