Offensive Player of the Year

Andy DePaola, Hereford

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior led the Bulls to their second state title game in three seasons, as Hereford finished a stellar year as 2A state runner-up to Potomac of Prince George's County.

DePaola, a third-year starter who quarterbacked the Bulls' title-winning team of 2002, completed 68. 2 percent of his passes (105-for-154) for 2,092 yards, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His deceptive fakes and sleight of hand worked to perfection out of the wing T offense, as he spread the ball evenly to as many as five different receivers.

Under the guidance of DePaola, who also rushed for 203 yards and four touchdowns, Hereford scored a single-season state-record 636 points.

Defensive Player of the Year

Melvin Alaeze, Randallstown

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound senior is called "a freak of nature" by Lackey of Charles County coach Scott Chadwick, and "the best athlete we've ever played against" by Bel Air coach Bruce Riley. Rated the top defensive end recruit by a number of scouting Web sites, Alaeze began the year with more than 50 full scholarship offers.

Alaeze made 43 solo tackles among his 56, registered 18.5 sacks, recovered a fumble and had an interception - this despite constantly facing double and triple teams.

Alaeze played tight end, wide receiver and running back on offense; linebacker, defensive tackle and defensive end, as well as punter and kicker. He averaged 40 yards punting, rushed for 351 yards and five touchdowns and caught 17 passes for 257 yards and three scores.

Coach of the Year

Richie Schell, Boys' Latin

After season-opening losses to Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference power Gilman and highly touted Haverford Prep, the Lakers won seven of their last eight games and a share of their third straight C Conference crown.

They did it despite being without second-team All-Metro running back Shane Walterhoefer and five-to-six other injured key starters through that time. Schell and his staff successfully juggled the lineup of the Lakers (7-3 overall, 5-1 conference), whose winning streak included wins over perennial B Conference powers Severn and St. Paul's. The Lakers tied St. Vincent Pallotti for the conference title.
