Player of the Year

Margot Phelan, Centennial

The senior outside hitter was a whirlwind in action as she pounded jump serves, dove to keep alive points and rocketed kills from one side to the other.

Phelan led the Eagles with a team-high 185 kills out of 375 attempts for a .493 kill percentage, and averaged three kills per game. She also scrambled around the court to ring up 243 digs, and average of 4 per game. A master of the jump serve, Phelan recorded 63 aces and a serving percentage of .870. Phelan was named to the All-Howard County team last fall.

Coach of the Year

Michael Bossom, Centennial

Bossom, who last earned this honor in 1997, returned with a wealth of talent that boasted experience and defensive skills. The one concern was a lack of height, as the Eagles did not field a single player over 6 feet. Not a problem for Bossom, who stressed defense and speed.

The players responded by forging a 20-0 season, capped by the program's 13th Howard County championship and 11th state title in 16 years. The victory in the state final vaulted Bossom into a tie with Catonsville's Debbie Clem and Wootton's Mickey Lipman for most championships by a coach (seven).
