Player of the Year

Tiffany Johnson, Arundel

An intimidating hitter with a powerful spike to go with sheer athleticism, Johnson led the No. 6 Wildcats to their first county title since the county championship match began in 1995.

The 5-foot-11 Johnson, a three-time All-County hitter, led an unlikely comeback from a 2-0 deficit in the county final to upset defending county champion and eventual 4A state champion Broadneck, 3-2. Signed with Kansas State, Johnson finished the season with 167 kills, 92 blocks and 115 digs. She also served .930 and set school career records for kills (495) and blocks (271).

Coach of the Year

Amy Hutson, Arundel

She led the No. 6 Wildcats (14-3) to their first county crown since the championship match began in 1995.

Hutson, who was an All-Metro hitter and county Player of the Year at Glen Burnie in 1996, guided the Wildcats to a furious comeback over defending champ Broadneck in the county final to win 3-2 after being down 2-0. As the season wore on, Hutson de-emphasized power-hitting on every chance and encouraged her players to occasionally drop balls in open holes in the defense.
