Player of the Year

Steve Basso, Hammond

Basso, a senior who excelled at both forward and sweeper, carried the surprising Golden Bears to an 8-2 league record - within half a game of the county championship behind two strong preseason favorites, River Hill and Mount Hebron.

He scored eight goals, more than half of his team's total of 15 for the season. And five of those goals were game-winners. He also had two assists.

Coach of the Year

Roch DeFrances, Atholton

After being seeded ninth in the Class 2A South region, the Raiders had to win six playoff games to claim a state title, and they did it by outscoring their opponents, 11-1. It was their second state title and first since 1990.

The Raiders were 12-0-1 over their last 13 games and finished at 15-4-1 and ranked No. 12. Eight years ago, when DeFrances came to Atholton, the school's talent had been depleted by the opening of River Hill. His patience and hard work were rewarded with his third straight winning season and second straight regional title.
