Playing his first season of football, the senior caught a game-winning, 85-yard touchdown pass in Saturday's Class 1A state championship game at M&T; Bank Stadium and finished the 16-14 victory over defending state champion Joppatowne with four catches for 157 yards.
Edwards set public school single-season records for touchdown catches (18) and receiving yardage (1,267), eclipsing the marks of 15 touchdown catches set by Billy Gaines of Urbana in 1999 and 1,166 yards receiving set by Joe Himes of Boonsboro in 1969.
His winning touchdown came on a pass from Marcus Taylor with 1:17 left in the third quarter.
Edwards, who also plays basketball for the Poets, dived into the end zone to complete the play.
St. Paul's, basketball
The 5-foot-9 senior guard led the Gators to the first upset of the girls basketball season, hitting a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime and finishing with 20 points in a 58-50 victory over then-No. 13 Roland Park.
Sloane hit two three-pointers, including one from midcourt, in the final minute against the Reds, who had a seven-point lead with less than a minute to go. She also had five rebounds and four assists in that game as the Gators, who finished second in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference last season, made their A Conference debut.
On Saturday, Sloane also had 15 points, six rebounds and two assists in a 48-42 win over B Conference foe Friends.
An AAU basketball veteran who played for the Waves 16-and-under team last summer, Sloane has 996 points in four seasons at St. Paul's.
