A resource-sharing session on diabetes scheduled Thursday


The Howard County Diabetes Coalition and the Columbia Association will sponsor "Open House: Diabetes," an information and resource-sharing session, to be held from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Supreme Sports Club, 7080 Deepage Drive.

Discussion will include facts about diabetes, the role of exercise and nutrition in managing the disease and new developments in care and resources.

Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

Stamp gift box workshop to be held in Oakland Mills

The Oakland Mills Community Association will sponsor a workshop, "Stamp Gift Boxes with Gina," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center.

Workshop participants can produce professional-looking holiday gift boxes using stamping techniques. The cost is $10 and a $5 materials fee.

Deployed: Army Sgt. Kevin L. Holmes, son of Arthur H. Holmes Jr. and Joyce L. Holmes of Owen Brown, has been deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 1993 graduate of Oakland Mills High School has six years of military service.

Learn jazz: The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer Jazz Club, an opportunity to learn to play jazz arrangements with Ken Jennings of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. today, and Dec. 14 and 21 at the library. Davis about obtaining financial aid for college and how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Please join: The PTAs of Oakland Mills Middle School, Oakland Mills High School and Stevens Forest, Talbott Springs and Thunder Hill elementary schools will honor members of the Oakland Mills Village Board at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16 for joining the PTAs of all five of the village's schools and for working on behalf of the schools. The award will be presented during a concert at Thunder Hills Elementary School. The schools urge all village residents to become advocates for their children and promote a partnership between home, school and community by joining the PTA of their neighborhood school. Learn to paint, dance: Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor watercolor classes with Carol Zika, for those ages 55 and older, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Fridays, starting Jan. 7. The class is designed for beginners, but experienced artists are welcome. The cost is $55, not including materials, for the 10-week class. County Line Dancing II, for advanced beginners ages 55 and older, will be offered from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Mondays at the east Columbia library, starting Jan. 10. The cost is $37 for the 11-week class. Partners are not necessary. Participants should wear or take leather-soled shoes, not sneakers. County Line Dancing I, also for senior citizens, will be offered from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Mondays, starting Jan. 10, at East Columbia Senior Center in the library.
