Ladew Gardens' holiday celebration offers tours, greens

Ladew Topiary Gardens will present "Christmas at an English Country House" on Friday, Saturday and Dec. 12. This annual holiday celebration features tours of the circa 1747 Ladew Manor House. This year's theme is "The Twelve Days of Christmas."

A holiday greens sale is also scheduled on the three days. The 22-acre gardens at 3535 Jarrettsville Pike, Monkton, will be open for self-guided tours. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, $2 for children 12 and younger.

Holiday Tour of Homes begins at 1 p.m. today

The Chesapeake Cancer Alliance will present its Holiday Tour of Homes today.

The tour showcases eight private homes in the Bel Air area that are decorated inside and out for the holiday season. The tour will last from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will also include a stop at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where refreshments will be served.

SARC needs volunteers, slates training session

The Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center of Harford County will provide a 30-hour training session beginning Jan. 22.

SARC is seeking volunteers to provide services to clients, particularly through the center's 24-hour Helpline. There are other areas in which SARC is also seeking help, including accompanying patients to hospitals and assisting in the office or with special events, the organization said.

Court advocates seek people to help with youths

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Harford County is accepting applications for volunteers to help the Circuit Court deal with abused and neglected children.

Volunteers will be trained to collect facts about a child's family background in a comprehensive investigation, the organization said. They will then make recommendations to the court based on those facts and present them in a court report.

The next training program begins Jan. 10 in the Grand Jury Room of the Circuit Courthouse in Bel Air. The training will run for five weeks on evenings and Saturdays. Information: 410-638-4938.

Library foundation names development specialist

Vanessa Milio has been named development specialist for the Harford County Public Library Foundation.

Before joining the Harford library, Milio was project director of the YMCA of Central Maryland and executive director of the Baltimore Police Athletic League. Milio has experience in annual giving campaigns, grant writing, corporate solicitations and special events, said Audra Caplan, director of Harford County Public Library.

HCC music department's student concert Dec. 15

The music department of Harford Community College will present a student concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 in Havre de Grace Hall, Room H005. The recital will feature students of voice and instrumental music.

Musical selections include works by several artists including Bach, Mozart, Strauss, Chopin, Debussey, Rachmaninoff, as well as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim and Meredith Willson.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and $1 for age 17 and younger. Proceeds benefit the HCC Music Scholarship Fund. Tickets are available in advance and at the door. For more information or to order tickets, call 410-836-4211.
