Mr. Cannella was born and raised in White Plains, N.Y.. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1940 and that year was hired by Sears.
During World War II, he served with the Army Corps of Engineers in Iceland. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War.
Mr. Cannella became manager of Sears' home improvement division for its Middle Atlantic region. He worked for many years at the North Avenue store in Baltimore and later in Laurel before retiring in 1980.
He moved this year from his longtime Mays Chapel home to Oak Crest Village. He enjoyed golfing, writing poetry, singing and playing the organ.
He was a Mason and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
A memorial service was held yesterday.
Mr. Cannella is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Ruth Ann Siebold; a son, John C. Cannella of Parkville; a daughter, Carla A. Hackley of Baltimore; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Another son, Gary C. Cannella, died in 2000.
