'SpongeBob' will appeal to both kids and parents

When a delicate genius such as Wilco's Jeff Tweedy composes a tune that makes the Banana Splits theme seem like a dirge and ranks among his best compositions, you know the kid inside him is alive and kicking.

Pop music is really just kid stuff; to play it, to enjoy it, it's about keeping that little bugger inside you alive. And if it is, you can't not love The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie -- Music From the Movie and More ... -- a soundtrack for an animated movie about a talking sponge?

Avril Lavigne's opening "SpongeBob SquarePants Theme" is a 45-second pop-metal sugar rush, out-sweetened only by German garage duo Electrocute's sassy "Bikini Bottom" and the Flaming Lips' sing-song-y "SpongeBob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy."

Kids can hip parents to hip-hop via the Hawaiian-guitar-kissed "Prince Paul's Bubble Party," done by the Waikikis plus Prince Paul & Wordsworth. Parents can turn their kids into indie snobs with the typically lovely Shins song "They'll Soon Discover." It's a family affair.
