Legion post seeks participants for oratorical contest

American Legion Adams, Hanna & Moore Memorial Post 156 will sponsor an oratorical contest for high school students early next year.

Those who proceed to the national rounds of the competition could win college scholarships.

Workshops scheduled on restorative justice

The Mediation and Conflict Resolution Center at Howard Community College will present the first of six regional restorative justice workshops form 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday in Room 100 of the college's Instructional Lab Building, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia.

Restorative justice focuses on healing the harm resulting from a crime as an alternative to punishing the perpetrator.

The workshop, open to everyone, is funded by a grant from the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office.

Cooperative Extension offers gardener training

New and experienced gardeners are invited to register for the Master Gardener Training Program offered by Maryland Cooperative Extension's Howard County office.

Training will cover plant, insect and disease problems, and topics related to sustainable and environmental impacts of gardening practices.

Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays, from Jan. 24 to March 28, at the Ellicott City offices of Maryland Cooperative Extension.

The cost is $150.

Those who graduate from the course must be willing to volunteer for educational projects.

Applicants to the program do not need hands-on experience in the garden. Anyone with a keen interest in gardening - especially those with skills or interests in writing, graphics and computers - are encouraged to apply.

The deadline to register is Nov. 30.

Forum to be held Tuesday on Social Security

NAMI-Howard County (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) will sponsor an educational forum on "Social Security Entitlement Programs for People With a Mental Disability" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center in Columbia.

Resumes being accepted for 14th District senator

The Howard County Republican Central Committee is accepting resumes from those interested in applying to be appointed to the 14th District seat in the state Senate. The seat was left vacant by the recent death of Sen. Robert H. Kittleman.

A final decision is expected by the end of the month.

Resumes should be sent to Howard County Republican Central Committee, P.O. Box 26, Ellicott City 21041. They must be received by Friday.

Group, students to discuss diversity appreciation

Community Building in Howard County will hold its quarterly meeting, focusing on "Understanding and Practicing Diversity Appreciation," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way in Columbia.

A panel of high school students will speak about ideal schools and what community groups can do to help. The students and others who attend can play a diversity appreciation game facilitated by Tu Van Trieu, director of the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Center at Howard Community College, and Charles Tracey, mediation coordinator at the center.

Light refreshments will be served.

Red Cross is calling for donations of blood

The Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services Region of the Red Cross is reporting a shortage of blood products for patients in area hospitals.

Blood donors can call 800-GIVE-LIFE. Apheresis (platelet) donors can call 800-272-2123.
