Garcia let go by Orioles

The Orioles released outfielder Karim Garcia after last night's game, cutting ties with the player they acquired from the New York Mets in the July trade for reliever Mike DeJean.

Garcia batted .212 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 23 games with the Orioles, but he gave them a surplus of left-handed hitting outfielders.

With the team set to face Oakland Athletics left-hander Barry Zito today, they released Garcia and sent Darnell McDonald back to Triple-A Ottawa, making room for the right-handed hitting Jose Leon and Tim Raines.

Leon was batting .322 for Ottawa, and Raines was hitting .262.

This will be Leon's fourth stint with the Orioles this season, and the third for Raines.

"I talked to Karim," said Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli. "He wasn't going to get playing time as much down the stretch. We wanted to see the kids play, and I wanted to give him a chance to catch on with a contending club."
